I have probably spent more time in my Owyhee field area in the last 4 years than I have spent anywhere other than my home.This map showing my traverses over that time is a testament to that. The middle Owyhee River area is a genuine geologic wonderland and is a joy to visit...under almost any conditions. This summer I have to finish my work there. I will spend nearly a month out in the wild between now and the end of July happily filling in the holes on the traverse map and making final calls on the lines. For those in the loop, we hope to lead an FOP trip out there in Fall 2012. One Owyhee river v. lava oriented paper is close to publication, the map is looking good, several other papers are in meat space, and I hope to integrate the map into a river guidebook at some point.
This is a multi-page version of the geologic map at 1:24,000. Each page has 500m UTM (NAD83) grid as well as river kilometers (and half kilometers). A very useful document that will hopefully evolve into a formal river guide. Every river trip I have been on desperately needs a river guide with the geologic map and not just geologic highlights.
You can rest assured I will be floating this in the heat of the summer this year. Amazing.
One question: Why the f@#k are we not on the Owyhee right now?
The recent (and streamable via image service!!) NAIP data for Oregon includes some colorful images from the really wet spring in 2009. It looks freaking awesome with the geo map overlay. See? It is worth the wait, right?
Wow. No map. No paper. Yikes. But think how much more we know now.
This just had to happen. Yikes.
I am hoping to use a word to name the lava flow that emanated from Duane's Forgotten butte. The only named features in the vicinity are Dry Lake and Mud Lake. Mud Lake is the largest. Thus, lava of mud lake (Qbm). Will go with this unless someone objects and offers logical substitute that lends itself to useful label. The attached map also includes several other features of interest.
This one shows just how high above the river the gravel lies as well as just how thick the Bogus lavas are...no person.
While my wife and kids were shaking in the Reno EQ swarm, I got this epic shot of the big (30 m high bluff at top of cliff) lava delta towering over the Heavens Gate landslide complex.
The first reviews are in and, once again, I spend the day with my pal Adobe Illustrator.
It will just get more and more complicated. See a truly fatal flaw? Let me know.
