Wax Lake Delta: A full-size experimental sedimentary system
I'm sure you've seen images of the Wax Lake Delta (~200 km west of the Mississippi's birdfoot delta) before. It is a beautiful depositional body with stunning channel bifurcations.Did you also know that it is only 69 years old? A canal was cut from Wax Lake, which is about 25 km inland, to the coast in 1941. Since that time this beautiful delta has formed, building about 8 km into the Gulf of Mexico. In the zoomed-out image note the straight canal feeding this delta in comparison to the natural Atchafalaya River (and its delta) immediately to the east. Because of the anthropogenic origin of Wax Lake Delta it has been, and continues to be, the subject of numerous studies of delta processes.
